The Lord is my Shepherd

Quiet Waters

“The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength.” (Psalm 23:1–3)

So often we feel we must create our own peace. We try to organise our days, manage every detail, and calm every storm around us. We think that if we can just get everything under control, then our souls will finally find rest.

But Psalm 23 reminds us: we are not our own shepherds. We are not the ones who have to produce green meadows and peaceful streams. We are the ones who are led.

“He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams.”

The quiet waters are not something we need to manufacture. The green meadows are not the result of our effort. They are gifts from the Shepherd who knows what we need and where to find it.

Our part is not to make the peace, but to turn our eyes to Him. To seek Him. To listen for His voice. As we look to the Shepherd, He does the leading.

There will be days when the path feels rocky and the way ahead is unclear. There will be moments when anxiety rises and our hearts race. In those moments, we do not have to work harder to calm ourselves. We can whisper, “Lord, You are my shepherd. Lead me.”

He is the One who knows the way to the still waters when we have lost sight of them. He is the One who can restore what feels worn out and emptied within us. He renews my strength. He restores my soul.

When we stop trying to be our own shepherd and simply follow, we find that the peace we long for does not come from having everything sorted. It comes from knowing whose care we are in.

A closing prayer

Loving Shepherd, thank You that I do not have to create my own green pastures or peaceful streams. You know what my soul needs, and You know how to lead me there. When I feel restless, anxious, or overwhelmed, help me to turn my eyes to You. Teach me to follow Your voice and to rest in Your care, trusting that You will restore my soul. Amen.
