God does not Sleep

“I lift up my eyes to the hills — where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1–2)

This is not a hurried question. It is the question of someone who has stopped long enough to look beyond themselves:

Where does my help come from?

There is no need to rush to answer, What must I do next?

Or even, How will this work out?

Instead, we are invited to dwell in the deeper question:

Where does my help come from?

“My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

The One who formed all things is here with you. The One who holds creation together is well able to take the weight of whatever you are carrying.

“He will not let your foot slip — He who watches over you will not slumber.”

This is a quiet promise. God doesn’t fall asleep. He always keeps focus. He does not become distracted. It doesn’t matter if your attention fades, or your strength runs low. God does not slumber.

“Indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”

The One who never sleeps is watching over you. In the long night of unanswered questions, in the slow hours when nothing seems to change, in the moments when you feel forgotten — He is not sleeping. He is keeping watch.

So you are free to lift your eyes. You are free to rest. Your help does not depend on your effort, your vigilance, or your understanding. Your help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

A closing prayer

Lord, Maker of heaven and earth, thank You that You never sleep and You never lose sight of me. When I am tired, anxious, or unsure what to do next, help me to lift my eyes to You. Teach me to rest in Your watchful care and to trust that my help comes from You alone. Amen.
